Are you ready for the best ever maze for kids? Are you ready for it being hands on, yet no prep? And, most importantly, are you ready for some corny, yet a-maze-ing, word puns?
This maze for kids is truly the best! It makes for a fabulous STEM challenge and a great quiet time activity, too. Both of those are such wonderful things you can’t possibly go wrong.
For this maze activity for kids you only need some popsicle sticks or cotton swabs (we call then Qtips in my neck of the woods). Aside from that, you just need a creative child or two.
One of my boys is actually credited with this idea. He created a Qtip marble maze some time ago. It was such a fun activity I shared it on the blog, but just as a photo. It was back when I was doing my “photo on Friday” series. You can have a peek here.
I have been meaning to turn it into a blog post since then. And now, voila! A mere 6 years later and I am making that dream come true.
This maze activity builds all sorts of skills. Children will be improving spatial skills, logic skills, problem solving skills, and fine motor skills to name just a few. Plus, it is plain old fun.
We started this activity by grabbing out the Qtips and creating a path from point A to point B. This was the solution for the maze.
Next, we added in a bunch of distraction paths.
Then, we ran out of Qtips, so started to use popsicle sticks.
The medium for this activity does not matter one little bit. Use Qtips, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, pipecleaners, whatever you have on hand.
This activity can be done on a table top, or it can be done right on the ground. One of my boys started to do this maze activity with popsicle sticks on the ground and it made me realize that it would be an awesome one to do on a really huge scale. Imagine making this maze big enough for a child to walk through!
We used Norah’s little characters for walking through the maze, but again, anything would work. Your child could try to solve it him or herself, or you could be the solver.
And there you have it! Six years in the making.
I hope this maze activity is just perfect for you and yours. Thank you so much for reading!
