What does a complete Grade One Homeschool Curriculum really look like?
When children move into Grade One, they’re ready to build confidence as readers, writers, mathematicians, and curious learners. It’s such an exciting year! But with so many homeschool resources available, it can also feel overwhelming trying to piece everything together.
That’s exactly why I created the Grade One Complete Curriculum.
Instead of juggling multiple programs and wondering if you’re covering everything, this complete bundle gives you an entire year of learning in one package. It includes a 36-week Grade One Math Curriculum, a 36-week Grade One Language Arts Curriculum, and 10 hands-on Family Unit Studiesโall designed to work together.
As always, my philosophy is simple: quality over quantity. I believe children learn best when lessons are short, focused, and manageable. That’s why both the math and language arts curriculum follow our one-page-a-day approach, leaving plenty of time for hands-on projects, books, crafts, and family adventures!
Today, I’ll take you inside the complete Grade One curriculum and show you exactly what your child will learn throughout the year.

Let’s take a closer look at each part of the curriculum.
Grade One Math Curriculum
In Grade One, math is about so much more than learning to count. It’s the year children begin building a strong foundation of mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills that will support future learning.
What makes the How Wee Learn Grade One Math Curriculum different?
Our Grade One Math Curriculum was carefully designed to help children develop a deep understanding of mathematical conceptsโnot simply memorize procedures. Using our one-page-a-day, quality-over-quantity approach, each lesson is easy to fit into your homeschool day.
One of the features parents love most is our cyclical approach to learning. Instead of teaching a concept once and moving on, important skills are revisited throughout the year. This gives children multiple opportunities to practice and master concepts, creating lasting understanding and confidence.
Another feature that makes Grade One Math so unique is our storybook approach. Throughout the curriculum, children follow an ongoing story, with math lessons and problem-solving woven naturally into the characters’ adventures. Children can see how mathematics is found in everyday life.
Best of all, the Grade One Math Curriculum meets or exceeds all core standards for both Canadian and U.S. Grade One homeschool families, giving you peace of mind that your child is building the skills they need.
What skills are covered in the Grade One Math Curriculum?
Throughout the 36-week curriculum, students explore all five essential strands of mathematics:
- โ Number Sense: Counting, place value, addition, subtraction, fractions, and developing a strong understanding of numbers.
- โ Algebra: Recognizing patterns, solving simple equations, and developing early algebraic thinking.
- โ Data: Collecting, organizing, graphing, and interpreting information.
- โ Spatial Sense:ย Geometry, measurement, shapes, position, and telling time.
- โ Financial Literacy:ย Identifying coins, understanding money, and making real-world connections.
The curriculum also includes printable math tools, extra practice activities, an answer key, and a course completion certificate to support your child throughout the year.
Altogether, this creates a complete Grade One math program that’s thorough, enjoyable, and simple to teach. You and your child will both have the confidence to enjoy math together!
Grade One Language Arts Curriculum
Learning to read and write is one of the biggest milestones of Grade One. It’s a privilege to be part of that journey!
What makes the How Wee Learn Grade One Language Arts Curriculum different?
Our Grade One Language Arts Curriculum helps children build strong reading and writing skills through short, engaging daily lessons that grow alongside them. We focus on one page a day, giving children the time they need to truly develop as readers and writers.
Like all of our curricula, Grade One Language Arts follows our quality-over-quantity philosophy. Skills are introduced gradually and revisited throughout the year, giving children repeated opportunities to practice without feeling rushed.
One feature families especially appreciate is the simple weekly rhythm. Each week follows a predictable schedule:
- Day 1: Phonics Focus
- Day 2: Reading and Comprehension
- Day 3: Review and Connect
- Day 4: Literacy Learning Activities
- Day 5: Journal Writing
This balanced approach keeps learning fresh while reinforcing important skills throughout the week.
What skills are covered in the Grade One Language Arts Curriculum?
Throughout the 36-week curriculum, children develop the foundational language arts skills they’ll use for years to come, including:
- โ Reading: Phonemic awareness, decoding, sight words, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
- โ Writing: Sentence building, phonetic spelling, grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and creative writing.
- โ Media Literacy: Learning how advertisements, packaging, and media messages are created to inform and persuade.
- โ And More! Poetry, word games, comics, journal writing, and creative activities make literacy something children genuinely look forward to.
Curriculum expectations are also included, showing how the program meets or exceeds all core standards for Grade One, along with an answer key and a course completion certificate.
This complete language arts program helps children become capable readers and writers, and effective communicators who will develop a lifelong love of learning.
