For centuries, people around the world have told stories about dragons, unicorns, mermaids, werewolves, phoenixes, fairies, and all sorts of incredible creatures. Some were protectors, some were tricksters. Some were mysterious. And some were downright terrifying! These stories give us such a fun glimpse into how different cultures imagined the world, and they give us so much room to wonder, create, and play.
I’m so excited to share our Mythical Creatures Family Unit Study with you! Across ten topics, you’ll learn about these fascinating legends through stories, questions, creative projects, games, music, coding, art, and plenty of hands-on fun.

What is a Family Unit Study?
But first… what exactly is a Family Unit Study?
This unit study, like all of our ever-growing library of unit studies, takes one big theme – Mythical Creatures – and breaks it down into ten manageable, bite-sized learning topics filled with hands-on activities for kids. This format gives you the freedom to dive into learning at a pace that works for your family. Perhaps you do one topic per day, perhaps one per week. Whatever suits your fancy! You can explore each topic from start to finish in about 1-2 hours each.
Dive in and watch the sparks of wonder ignite. Watch the child-led learning take off. Watch what happens when children are engaged in what they are learning!
Each of the 10 topics includes:
- an interesting fact,
- a discussion question,
- informative information,
- a curated YouTube video,
- a recommended book,
- a math or literacy enrichment question (with three difficulty levels),
- and an ultimate-can’t-be-beat hands-on activity!
Plus, all subjects are covered across the 10 topics! Geography, History, Science, Social Studies, Music, Art, Health, Literacy, and Math.

Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect with the Mythical Creatures Family Unit Study. Below are the 10 topics, along with some examples of the hands-on activities you will enjoy together.
Topic #1: Dragons
What comes to mind when you think of a dragon? Explore how different cultures imagined these mighty creatures, from wise dragons connected to rain and rivers to fierce creatures said to guard treasure. Then, dive into learning about parts of a dragon, and have fun with a Dragons Around the World activity! You’ll identify regions on a map and color dragons from different parts of the world.
Topic #2: Unicorns
Did you know unicorns have been part of stories and writings for thousands of years? Learn why these graceful creatures became symbols of purity, magic, healing, and legends that make unicorns such powerful symbols throughout history and culture. Then create your own Unicorn Habitat, complete with a food chain that shows how your unicorn fits into its environment.
Topic #3: Mermaids
What might you hear if you could listen beneath the waves? Discover the legends of mermaids from coastal cultures around the world, from stories of helpful ocean guides to warnings for sailors near the waves. With the Underwater Listening Device activity, you’ll experience how sound travels through water – a definite favorite activity!
Topic #4: Werewolves
Okay, but what if you really could turn into a wolf? Werewolf stories have been around for centuries, with tales of people transforming during a full moon or because of magic, curses, or mysterious powers. The Real Wolves vs. Werewolves Game lets you have a little fun with fact and folklore as you sort cards and decide which traits belong to real wolves and which belong to werewolf legends!
Topic #5: Griffins and Hippogriffs
What do you get when you combine the body of a lion with the head and wings of an eagle? Meet the griffin – and its equally fascinating cousin, the hippogriff! Discover why storytellers imagined these incredible creatures and what they symbolized, then Code a Flying Beast in Scratch and bring your own griffin or hippogriff to life on the screen. How fun is that!
Topic #6: Phoenixes and Firebirds
What could possibly rise from its own ashes? The phoenix is a legendary bird with stories reaching back to ancient cultures, where fiery birds were connected to the sun, renewal, and new beginnings. Learn about the stories behind these magical birds, then bring one to life with Firebird Art, using watercolor paint, oil pastel, and salt to create a fiery scene.
Topic #7: Mythical Forest Beings
What might be hiding just beyond the edge of the forest? Goblins, trolls, and forest spirits – some mischievous, some protective, and some said to guard hidden treasures – discover them all. Then, create your own Forest Spirit Agreement, where you’ll imagine a mythical forest, make rules for its creatures, and sign your very own agreement.
Topic #8: Fairies and Nature Spirits
Have you ever spotted a circle of mushrooms and wondered what might have happened there? Learn about the stories of fairies and nature spirits who were believed to live among forests, rivers, flowers, and hills, sometimes protecting nature and sometimes playing tricks on humans. Then, have some fun creating a fairy home using natural materials you find on a nature walk.
Topic #9: Centaurs and Satyrs
What happens when you mix a person with an animal? Ancient storytellers imagined some pretty fascinating answers! Meet the centaurs and satyrs of Greek mythology, discover what these half-human, half-animal creatures represented, and make your own DIY Pan Flute inspired by the music associated with these mythical characters.
Topic #10: Chimera and Hybrid Monsters
What would happen if you could mix and match parts from all kinds of animals to create a monster? Meet the Chimera and other hybrid creatures from myths around the world. Why did storytellers imagine creatures that were stronger, stranger, or more dangerous than ordinary animals? You’ll get to think about that while you play a fun game of Roll a Monster. You’ll let the dice decide which animal features your creature gets before drawing or creating your own hybrid monster!
