How to Make Hollow Clay Eggs

March 8, 2017 by Sarah Leave a Comment

Last week we were up North visiting family. We always love visiting and it is one of my boys very favourite places to be. They adore their grandparents so much, love all the neat things to do and see, and usually get to stay up late.

Which makes it no surprise that they tend to get really, really ramped up. (Really ramped up)

For this reason, I try to plan a calming, structured activity or two to pull out just in case the need arises. And the need always arises.

During our last visit we made an Easter craft and it turned out so cute that I thought I should share it here.

I tried to make clay Easter eggs with the kids last year but they did not work very well. I think the problem was that they were so thick. So this year we made some hollow Easter eggs and they worked much better.

I grabbed a pack of plastic Easter eggs from the dollarstore and whipped up a quick batch of baking soda clay (1.5 cup baking soda, 1 cup cornstarch, 1 cup water).

The kids then smoothed the clay over the plastic eggs in a thin layer. This clay is so nice to work with — it smooths out beautifully and stuck to the plastic egg very well.

Once it was all smooth we used toothpicks to add designs into the eggs.

They turned out very pretty. I had intended on painting them but we haven’t done that yet. I think they would look lovely painted with watercolour.

Don’t you think they would be relaxing to paint? I sense a quiet time activity heading our way.

These hollow Easter eggs dried very well – nice and smooth and no cracking at all. I bet they would even keep from year to year. I do love a good keepsake craft.

Quiet time activity meet keepsake craft? Be still my heart.

I hope you are having a fabulous week friends. Thank you so much for reading.
