If you’ve been around here for a while, you know how passionate I am about helping little ones learn to read. Today, though, I’m excited to give you a sneak peek at something just as important—and just as fun: learning to write! We put a lot of energy into teaching our kids to read (and rightly so!), but writing and spelling deserve some love too. That’s why I created How Wee Write—a complete, thoughtfully designed program that helps children develop writing skills in a way that feels natural, playful, and developmentally appropriate.
How Wee Write is the perfect companion to my best-selling resource, How Wee Read. The two programs work beautifully together, with each writing lesson aligning with a corresponding reading lesson. But don’t worry—they also stand strong on their own!
Now, let’s take a closer look at what makes this complete learn-to-write program so special.
How Wee Write: A Complete Learn-to-Write Program
Let’s take a quick walk through the four parts of How Wee Write. This way, you will know exactly what to expect and how to make the most of each stage. Whether you’re using this alongside How Wee Read or on its own, you’ll find the flow easy to follow and gentle for your up-and-coming writer.
Part 1: Pre-Writing
Before we jump into letters and words, we begin with seven simple activities that prepare little hands for writing. These pre-writing lessons focus on form drawing—an early step in understanding how writing works and how marks on a page can hold meaning. You can complete one lesson a day, keeping it light and fun.
Then, when you have completed the seven lessons, I will provide you with some additional practice activities to try with your child, such as drawing on a chalkboard with water. Have your child draw one of the designs from Part One on a chalkboard with chalk. Next, give your child a paintbrush with a cup of water and have them trace over the design, erasing it as they go.
Part 2: Letters, Sounds, and Blending
Now the real fun begins—we start forming letters! Just like in How Wee Read, we follow a special order for teaching the alphabet. This has been carefully chosen to support early reading success:
- s, a, t, i, p, n
- c, k, e, h, r
- m, d, g, o
- l, f, b, q, u
- j, z, w
- v, y, x
While this order supports reading development, it also works beautifully for writing. If your little one is confidently completing the pre-writing pages, they’re ready for this next step. Each letter is introduced one at a time—first lowercase, then uppercase—and we sneak in a little spelling fun too! For example, after learning “s” and “a,” your child will get to write the word “as.” Add in “t,” and suddenly they’re writing “sat.”
Part 3: Special Rules
In this section, we tackle some of the trickier parts of writing and spelling—those little exceptions and “wait, what?” moments. We’ll gently introduce rules and patterns to help make sense of it all. We will help with some common challenges, like letter reversals, while also working on trickier spelling challenges like the “Magic E,” and learn how it changes short vowels into long ones. It’s a magical moment when kids begin to spot these patterns in the words around them!
Part 4: Decodable Readers
Now it’s time to put it all together. In the final section, your child will start writing simple sentences that align with the word families they’re learning in How Wee Read. We begin with traceable sentences and copywork to build confidence and solidify those writing muscles. As we progress, the support gradually decreases, moving from tracing to copywork, and eventually to dictation. Dictation means you’ll read the sentence aloud, and your child will write it down on their own. You’ll even have access to pre-recorded dictations online so your child can play the sentence over and over as they write it! It’s a beautiful way to watch independence blossom, one word at a time.
And there you have it—the whole story. Written by your child! (Next stop: published author, right?)
How Wee Write was made to grow right alongside your little learner, meeting them where they are and gently guiding them forward as they learn to write. It’s a complete, confidence-building resource that weaves together writing, spelling, and even a bit of reading magic.
