How Wee Read: A Homeschool Reading Curriculum
How Wee Read includes everything you will need—a coursebook, video lessons, rhyming pictures, word puzzles, alphabet cards, word family wheels, and more—all featuring beautiful watercolor art.
Your coursebook is divided into four sections:
- Step 1: Phonological Awareness
- Step 2: Letters, Sounds, and Blending
- Step 3: Special Rules
- Step 4: Decodable Readers
Let’s examine the importance of each section and how it can help your child become a confident reader.
Step 1: Phonological Awareness
Did you know that phonological awareness is one of the strongest predictors of early reading success?
There are seven pre-reading skills that are more important than knowing the letters of the alphabet. They are called phonological awareness skills, and this is where our adventure begins. Phonological awareness is auditory in nature; it is about learning to hear and differentiate between sounds. The seven phonological awareness skills are:
- Rhyming
- Word Awareness
- Sound Identification
- Syllable Awareness
- Sound Segmenting
- Sound Blending
- Deleting Sounds
At this stage, we will introduce children to these seven skills, laying the groundwork for building core skills and empowering them in their reading journey.
Step 2: Letters, Sounds, and Blending
Next, we dive into learning letters and sounds and blending them together. We use a special order to introduce letters that helps children start blending and building confidence right away.
We begin with the letters s, a, t, i, p, and n. Through a simple game, your child learns:
- Lowercase Letter Names
- Uppercase Letter Names
- and Letter Sounds
After your child has mastered the first letter group through the games provided, we move on to sound blending. You will be thrilled to see your child reading words like sat, pin, and nap immediately!
Once you have completed this section, your child will know all of their letters and the letter sounds, and will have mastered CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.
Step 3: Special Rules and Exceptions
Now it’s time to teach your child a few special rules. In this section, we will introduce your child to:
- Digraphs
- Blends
- Vowels
- The Magic Letter E
While there are certainly more special rules—the English language is infamous for its rules and exceptions!—these four rules offer a solid base for your child to move on to Step 4.
If this sounds overwhelming, remember that I’m here to help! I will walk you and your child through each step with the included video lessons.
Step 4: Decodable Readers
This is where the magic truly begins. ✨ We add one rule at a time as we progress through decodable readers. We pause on each reader, practicing the story and the related word list until your child has absolutely mastered it. Then, we move on to the next story!
Each decodable reader:
- Explicitly introduces a single rule
- Sequentially adds a new rule or letter combination
- Builds on vocabulary
- Slowly increases in complexity
As you progress through the coursebook, you will continue to get tips and tricks to build on your child’s skills and comprehension. They will tackle all the tricky parts of the English language until your child confidently reads the final story.
And this, my friend, means they have mastered it! Your child CAN read!
I am so excited about this homeschool reading curriculum, and I hope you are, too! Let’s do this together! With How Wee Read, we take the stress and mystery out of teaching our children to read. We can raise a generation of strong, confident readers.
