When I taught Kindergarten, I loved the story, The Jolly Postman. So we thought it only fitting to create a Woodland Post Office Theme to add to everyone’s Play-Based Learning Library in our How Wee Learn Community Membership!
Now don’t be fooled, this Exclusive Resource is so much more than just cute. It is FULL of learning.
As you pop up Mrs. Doe, her adorable cottage, and her mailbox on a bedroom door, wall, or even a tree outside, you will be transforming your space into an educational haven.
Each Play-Based Resource, as it is delivered to Members on the 1st of each and every month, includes an introduction page outlining ideas for play and suggestions for adding in:
- Imaginative Play
- Literacy (for big and little ones)
- Math (for big and little ones)
- Art
- Fine Motor Skills
- Problem Solving and Creativity
Let’s have a peek at what the introduction page looks like for this Woodland Post Office Play-Based Learning Resource – which by the way, is the one you receive immediately if you choose to sign up for our How Wee Learn Community membership when the doors re-open on Sunday, November 3rd
Here are suggestions for getting loads of learning out of this Play-Based Resource:
🙌 Imaginative Play:
Let’s play mail carrier! If you have a child young enough, definitely begin by creating the postal carrier’s hat with your child – a hat makes everything more fun! But don’t think this activity is just for the littlest of ones. There is so much learning and play to be had for children of all ages with this resource.
📚 Literacy:
Little Ones: Young children will be practicing letter matching as they figure out whose mail belongs to who. They will be learning how writing conveys meaning as they figure out where to deliver each letter. Little ones can even create their very own letters using first letter sounds and pictures.
Big Kids: Older children will have fun creating their very own letters to either the pretend characters in this resource, or using the beautiful letter and envelope templates to create mail for family and friends! They will learn all about what is needed for a letter to find it’s way to it’s recipient as they learn about addressing an envelope, too. Finally, they can try out the word scrambles!
🔢 Math
Little Ones: Let your little one help you figure out how to piece the character’s houses together! This is excellent for building spatial skills. We also practice sequential thinking as children follow the order outlined for mailing a package. Children will be practicing their counting skills and one-to-one correspondence with Woodland Post Office I Spy!
Big Kids: You can add in the opportunity for learning about weight as you bring your kitchen scale into play! Children can measure packages and determine if something would require one, two, or three stamps. Simply create a little chart to determine the cost per weight.
🎨 Art
Work together to build scissor skills as you cut out the characters and their houses! Find a place on a wall for each one – or place them on bedroom doors. Children can also try their hand at turning a cardboard box into a mailbox!
✂️ Fine Motor Skills:
Build those fine motor skills as children cut out stamps and the various addresses for the woodland friends. Children will also build fine motor skills by printing on envelopes and letters, folding envelopes, and delivering mail to mail boxes.
🕵️♂️ Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
This month’s resource is a great one for working on these important areas. How could your child solve the problem of only a partial address being written? What would be the most efficient way to deliver many letters? Get creative as you give your child a challenge or two!
And there you have it! Ideas for helping you get started with your Woodland Post Office. And ideas like this are included with each and every Exclusive Resource you receive in the How Wee Learn Community Membership.
