If your child loves superheroes and saving the day, learning about knights and castles during the medieval times is going to be an absolute blast. In this fun activity from our Kindergarten at Home Curriculum, your child will develop and strengthen their fine motor skills as they enjoy some pretend play and create suits of armour in this knights craft!
As you may know, Kindergarten at Home is broken down into 18 mini unit studies, one of which is Knights and Castles! My Kindergarten Curriculum is full of problem solving, creativity and pretend play. This craft is from the Knights and Castles section of the Curriculum and is fabulous for building hand strength, challenging young minds to solve problems, and is a wonderful sensory-rich activity as well.
Speaking of sensory play, have you downloaded your Free Sensory Bins 101 Guide? It’s full of tips and tricks for using sensory bins in your home or classroom, and has some wonderful sensory bin ideas for inspiration. Grab it right here:
Okay, back to Knights and Castles!
For this craft you will need:
- Tinfoil
- Painters Tape or Masking Tape
- Little toy people or stuffed animals
I like to set this activity up as a sensory bin ideal for independent exploration.
To make this a sensory bin activity, cut small strips of tin foil to make wrapping a little easier. Put strips of tinfoil and tape in a small bin and you are ready to go! Bins with lids are great as they stack well and help keep your bins organized.
To begin this knights craft, the most important material is the toy or stuffed animal. Ask your child which of their little toy people or stuffed animals they would like to turn into knights in shining armour. It adds to the fun of the activity by allowing them to choose. They can choose their favorite dolls and don’t forget a toy horse or pony. Afterall, every knight needs a noble steed!
To make a suit of armour from our knights and castles theme, your child will use small strips of foil to wrap around their little toy people or stuffed animal. In order to hold it in place, they can use a favorite in the Kindergarten at Home Curriculum… painter’s tape. This can be found at most dollar or hardware stores. This works great to stick to the aluminum foil and will be simple enough for your little one to manipulate.
As they press the foil on and around the body and limbs of their stuffed animals or dolls, they can explore the texture change as the foil goes from smooth and soft to crinkly and rough. What a transformation! The crinkling sound it makes when it is being scrunched up is an experience in its own right!
Your little one will enjoy tons of fun as they transform their ordinary toys into these strong knights. Your children develop their imagination and independence through creative play. They explore and learn through this exploration of sounds and textures and you can enjoy some quiet time with these amazing quiet bins! Just prepare and sit back and enjoy the joy and laughter this knights craft gives your little one.
By adding in pretend play activities, such as this one, to our Kindergarten Curriculum children have the opportunity to really solidify everything they are learning about. This Kindergarten Curriculum truly has it all!
