The Jolly Postman written by Janet and Allan Ahlberg is one of my all time favourite books for kids. This book is a classic!
Description: This book is about a postman who delivers letters to fairy-tale characters. This book is unique as it has envelopes on certain pages housing letters to the various characters inside. The letters are cute and clever. My favourite is the letter of apology written to the Three Bears from Goldilocks.
Ideal ages: There is SO much to this book that it is great for a wide variety of ages. It is best if kids are familiar with common Nursery Rhymes. I would suggest Ages 3 – 8
Suggested Learning Activities: There is certainly no shortage in this book!
- Introduce your little one to different forms of writing by studying each letter (formal letter, postcard, etc) What is the same about the different forms? What is different?
- Make Predictions. What do you think Goldilocks’ letter will be about?
- Write your own letters and really mail them to family and friends.
- Extend this activity and create your own family post office!
