I have always loved poems. From the time I was a little girl until now, poems have always had a special place in my heart. I love hearing them, creating them, and watching how a few carefully chosen words can stir so much emotion and imagination.
Poetry is not just a joy for adults—it’s also incredibly beneficial for kids. Writing and listening to poetry helps children build language skills, boost confidence with reading aloud, improve their writing and creativity, and gives them a powerful tool for expressing themselves.
So today, I’m excited to share six poem-writing ideas that are just perfect for Grade Six students!

6 Poem Ideas Perfect for Grade Six
#1 Acrostic Poems
First up, we have acrostic poems! Acrostics are a fun poetic form for any age. An acrostic poem is when a word, name, or phrase is written vertically down the side of a page. Each letter becomes the first letter of a line in the poem, often used to describe the chosen word or theme. They usually don’t rhyme, making them a simple and approachable place to start.

Here is a fantastic example from Poetry4Kids.com using the words Ice Cream:
#2 Cinquain Poems
A cinquain poem is a five-line poem that describes a person, place, or thing. They have a specific syllable structure (2,4,6,8,2) and do not rhyme, making them great for Grade 6 students. They offer a structured way to express creativity and explore descriptive language. The rules for writing a cinquain poem are the following:
- Line 1 = one word, two syllables (noun)
- Line 2 = two words, four syllables (adjectives)
- Line 3 = three action words, six syllables (verbs)
- Line 4 = four-word sentence, eight syllables (describe a feeling)
- Line 5 = one word, two syllables (synonym-another word meaning the same thing)

#3 Limericks
A limerick is a funny rhyming poem. The first, second, and fifth lines rhyme, while the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other. We call this an AABBA rhyme scheme. These poems are always a hit with kids! For your Grade 6 students, ask them to use the correct number of syllables for each line: lines 1, 2, and 5 should have 7-9 syllables, and lines 3 and 4 have 5-7 syllables.

Here’s a fun example of a limerick about… limericks!
#4 Haiku Poems
A haiku poem is a Japanese form of poetry with three lines, usually following a 5-7-5 syllable structure. Haikus are often about simple natural elements and evoke strong imagery. These are wonderful poems for Grade 6 students to create.

Take a look at this famous example by Matsuo Bashō:
#5 Sonnet Poems
Sonnets are lyrical poems that pack emotion into 14 beautifully structured lines. They follow specific rhyme schemes, most commonly the Shakespearean sonnet: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. These poems are great for exploring deeper themes such as love, nature, and self-reflection.

Here is a famous example from William Shakespeare:
#6 Free Verse Poems
If your child prefers to ditch the rules and go with the flow, free verse poetry is for them! This style doesn’t follow a set rhyme or rhythm, which makes it perfect for personal expression. It invites creativity and freedom while still encouraging students to think about tone, word choice, and emotion.

Here is a beautiful example by Carl Sandburg:
Poetry is more than just words on a page—it’s rhythm, emotion, imagination, and voice. And for Grade 6 learners, it’s also a fantastic way to build literacy skills while having fun!
