Helping young kids wind down at the end of the day can be more than just brushing their teeth and reading a story. It’s also the perfect time to build some positive habits. One of the sweetest and most meaningful ways to do that is with a Bedtime Gratitude Journal for Kindergarteners.
Just a few minutes each night spent talking about what they’re thankful for—whether it’s a big moment or something as small as their favorite snack—can make a big difference. It boosts their mood, builds emotional awareness, and strengthens your connection.
In my resource, Kindergarten at Home, I introduce the idea of a bedtime gratitude journal and share some lovely ways to weave it into your evening routine. It’s a simple practice with a powerful impact, especially when started early. But really, it can benefit children at any age.
Today, I would love for you to start your own Bedtime Gratitude Journal with your little one, and I will help you get started with this Free Printable Cover. Enter your email below, and you will instantly receive a beautiful bedtime gratitude journal cover.
Now, let’s jump into some inspiring ways to use your journal at home.
Bedtime Gratitude Journal for Kindergarteners
One of my favorite parts of homeschooling is the freedom to make learning feel natural and meaningful at any time of the day. There’s something really special about doing a bit of writing and reflection right before bed. It’s a calm, intentional way to end the day—and a chance to plant seeds of emotional well-being through one simple moment of connection with our children.
Let’s take a closer look at one of the activities from Kindergarten at Home.
This one is from the theme Feelings and Emotions. In this theme, your child will explore a wide range of emotions in a fun and meaningful way. Like all themes in the resource, it includes a variety of activities across literacy, math, health and wellness, nature, and science with hands-on STEM challenges, outdoor learning, and opportunities to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
This activity comes from the Health and Wellness section and is wonderfully simple to do at home.
All you need is the free printable Bedtime Gratitude Journal (linked above), along with a few extra blank pages for writing or drawing. If your child prefers to draw, have some crayons handy too!
Begin by introducing the idea of gratitude with a gentle prompt, such as:
“Let’s talk about being grateful! Being grateful means noticing the good things in our lives and feeling thankful for them. Today, I’m grateful for my loving family and the delicious dinner we shared. What’s something you’re grateful for?”
Next, open your child’s journal and write:
“Today, [Child’s Name] is grateful for…”
Help them spell out their name—encourage them to say each letter with you or try writing it on their own. Then, write down what they shared or invite them to draw a picture. It’s a simple but powerful way to end the day on a positive note and build emotional awareness, plus add in some literacy skill-building.
You might be surprised by what your child says each night when you ask what they’re thankful for. One evening, my heart melted when I heard, “I’m grateful you helped me put my shoes on.” It’s something we do every day, without thinking—but to them, it means the world. Kids naturally feel gratitude, we’re just helping them find the words to share it!
Another great way to use your Gratitude Journal is around the holidays. Holidays are often a very happy time for children. With your little one, make a picture of all the things that make your child feel happy and grateful during the holidays in their Bedtime Gratitude Journal. Keep the journal handy and add to it throughout the holiday season. Feeling grateful is a wonderful way to encourage feelings of happiness!
Learning doesn’t have to happen at a desk or during set hours. It can be as simple and sweet as a bedtime gratitude journal for your kindergartener. Little moments like these help build meaningful connections and lifelong habits—one bedtime reflection at a time.
