Burlap Candy Cane Christmas Decoration

December 5, 2013 by Sarah 6 Comments

I am so excited to be participating in the 20 Days of a Kid-made Christmas series with Mama Miss and over 50 kid bloggers world wide!  I am thrilled to be able to share our burlap wrapped candy cane Christmas decoration as part of this series.  This is a great Christmas craft for kids to make because it is simple, messy, and they can do it on their own!

Before we dive into it, be sure to get your FREE Sample from Christmas School! It includes the topic all about reindeer and some beautiful watercolor vocabulary cards as well. Grab the sample below, and if you love it—which I know you will!—you can get the full version right here: https://shop.howweelearn.com/products/christmas-school

Candy cane Christmas craft for kids to make

I made this burlap candy cane Christmas ornament with my three year old Sammy.  I prepared the craft, and he took it from there!

To make this Christmas ornament we used only 3 things:

  • burlap (cut into strips)
  • white glue mixed with water (about 2 parts glue to 1 part water)
  • candy canes

That’s it!  The sensory part to this activity makes it a great Christmas craft for kids to make as well.  The burlap gets nice and gooey with the glue, creating an interesting consistency and texture for wee ones to work with.

To make this burlap candy cane Christmas ornament:

To make this ornament Sammy tried a few different methods.  The one that worked the best was painting the candy cane with the glue mixture and wrapping the burlap around the candy cane.  Since the burlap is a bit mesh-like it held to the candy cane surprisingly well.  We left the wrappers on the candy cane and the burlap stuck very well to the plastic.

A few other methods that were tried were dipping the burlap directly into the glue and painting the burlap with the glue.  Both of these methods also worked, but were more messy and made the burlap a bit more fussy to work with.

We laid the Christmas ornaments out to dry on our plastic craft table cloth and in the morning they were completely dry and hard.  And they looked beautiful on the tree too!

I love the rustic look of burlap and these candy canes turned our to be a great Christmas craft for kids to make!  A fun Christmas craft for the kids to make on their own, and an ornament that looks rustic and beautiful on the tree? Merry Christmas to me!!

Today, Tara from Feels Like Home is joining me in sharing her kid-made ornament.  I am so excited to see what ornament she has made with her wee ones!
