We have officially entered camping season! One of my favorite parts of camping is sitting around the campfire, roasting s’mores, and telling campfire stories.
Sometimes, we use Mad Libs to create silly stories, just like the ones included with The Happy Camper (more on that in a bit!).
Sometimes, we take turns making up scary stories. I will never forget the one about the boy who ordered a large fry from McDonald’s and received—shock! horror!—a SMALL fry instead!! WITH NO SALT!
And sometimes, we like to read a story aloud to kick things off and get those creative juices flowing.
So today, I am going to share with you three campfire stories for your next camping trip! The first story is silly, the second has a touch of unspooky lore, and the third is a sweet story.
The Happy Camper
Before we get into the stories, remember how I mentioned Mad Libs? You know, those fill-in-the-blank stories that ask you for, say, a noun, a color, a name, etc., then when you read it all together, it makes a super silly story?
Well, the How Wee Learn Community Exclusive Resource for June 2024 includes a couple of those stories, and they are Just. So. Cute. You know it’s a good Mad Lib when Little Miss asks to make up new versions of the same story again and again, giggling the entire time!
And that’s only one teeny tiny part of the Happy Camper Exclusive Resource. It also has:
- Printable 3D Campfire & S’mores
- Camping I Spy
- Check-In Sign and Name Tags
- Campsite # & Park Amenities Signs
- Park Rules Poster
- Map Icons
- Fire Danger Sign with Movable Arrow
- Registration Form
- Map Coordinates Practice
- DIY Campground Map
- 3x Nature Animal Pages
Phew. That’s enough for a summer full of fun and imaginative camping play!

Campfire Stories for Kids
Alright, are you ready for the campfire stories now? I have three to share with you: A Box of Socks (a silly story), The Hidden Room (some unspooky lore), and Mallow the Marshmallow (a sweet story).
The complete campfire stories are written below, but you can also download a Free Printable Campfire Stories Booklet to bring along with you on your next camping trip right here:
Silly Campfire Story: A Box of Socks
Once upon a time, there was an adventurous young girl named Lily. Lily loved exploring the forest, searching for hidden treasures and secret hideouts.
One summer day, while wandering through the woods, Lily stumbled upon a peculiar sight—a large box lay nestled among the trees. Curious, she tiptoed closer and peeked inside.
To her surprise, the box was filled to the brim with… socks! Bright socks, striped socks, polka-dotted socks… Socks of every color and pattern imaginable!
“Oh my goodness!” Lily exclaimed, her eyes widening. “A box full of mismatched socks? How strange!”
Lily rummaged through the box, laughing at the absurdity of it all.
Just as she was about to declare herself the queen of mismatched socks, she heard a rustling in the bushes behind her. Lily turned to see a small creature emerge—a tiny gnome with a twinkle in his eye and a sock in his hand.
“Ahoy there, young lass!” the gnome chirped as he dropped the sock into the box. “I see you’ve discovered my box of socks!”
Lily blinked in surprise, “This is your box of socks?”
The gnome nodded enthusiastically, his pointy hat bobbing up and down. “Aye, that’s right! I collect socks from laundry lines and dryer vents! Turn them into hats and mitts for my friends and family, I do!”
Lily couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “So you’re the reason why socks always seem to disappear in the wash!” she exclaimed.
The gnome grinned from ear to ear, “Guilty as charged!” he chuckled.
And with that, the gnome picked up his box of socks and disappeared back through the bushes.
From that day on, whenever Lily found herself missing a sock, she would think of the gnome and his box of socks. And she would smile, knowing that perhaps a little gnome is now wearing her missing sock as a hat.
The End.
Unspooky Campfire Story: The Hidden Room
One summer day, a young boy and his family were hiking through the forest in this very campground. As they hiked, the boy wandered off down a path, picking up rocks for his collection along the way. Then, as the boy rounded a corner, he saw a large, breathtaking tree. Its towering trunk twisted and turned, growing into a beautiful canopy of bright green leaves above. But what caught the boy’s attention most was a large hollow in the side of the tree.
The boy approached the tree and peered inside, but he couldn’t see anything. Feeling brave, he crawled into the hollow, venturing deeper and deeper. Eventually, he emerged in a small room hidden below the tree, barely big enough for the boy to stand. The walls were made of knotted wood, and the floor was covered in a soft carpet of moss.
As the boy’s eyes adjusted to the darkness, he noticed a tiny, tattered journal sitting on a small shelf.
Intrigued, the boy picked up the journal and began to read. He discovered that it belonged to a fairy who cared for the forest, protecting all of its inhabitants, large and small, from harm.
As the boy read on, he learned that the fairy had hidden treasures throughout the forest—shimmering gemstones, polished shells, delicate feathers, and other small treasures.
Before he could read more, he heard his parents calling his name. So, the boy carefully returned the journal to the shelf and crawled back out of the tree. He couldn’t wait to show his parents what he found! But when he led them back down the path… it was gone. No tree. No hollow. No hidden room.
The boy never did find that tree again, but it is said that if you find one of the fairy’s hidden treasures, the tree will be revealed once more.
The End.
Sweet Campfire Story: Mallow the Marshmallow
Once upon a time, in a cozy little kitchen, there lived a plump and fluffy marshmallow named Mallow. Mallow had a big dream: he wanted to become a delicious s’more. He had heard tales from the older marshmallows about the magical transformation that happens when you become part of a s’more—the gooey chocolate, the crispy graham crackers, and the warmth of the campfire. It sounded perfect.
One sunny day, Mallow found himself in a picnic basket with his friends, Graham the cracker and Choco the chocolate bar. They were being taken to a campsite by a girl and her family who loved making s’mores.
As night fell and the family gathered around a campfire, Mallow knew his moment was coming. He wiggled with anticipation as he was placed on a skewer and gently roasted over the fire. The warmth made him feel cozy and special.
“You’re doing great, Mallow!” said Graham, who was waiting patiently with Choco. “You’re almost ready!”
Mallow could feel himself getting golden and toasty. When he was just right, the girl carefully placed him on a graham cracker and topped him with a square of Choco. Then, another graham cracker was gently pressed on top, and Mallow felt the delightful squish as he melted into a delicious, gooey treat.
“This is it!” Mallow thought, feeling proud and happy. “I’m finally a s’more!”
The girl took a big bite, and Mallow felt a wave of joy as she smiled and laughed, savoring the sweet, gooey goodness. He knew he had made the girl happy, and that made his heart glow with pride.
The End.
