Don’t let math get sour—keep it sweet with these citrus math fraction manipulatives! This bundle has been created for you to use with your children and it is completely FREE!
These fraction printables are perfect for children in Grades 1-3 and go along beautifully with the How Wee Learn Math Curriculums. Our math curriculum is unique for two reasons:
- We use storytelling to reach and engage children and ensure the math they are learning makes sense to them.
- Each of my primary math curriculums requires only 20 minutes (one page) a day! That’s it!
You can find out all about the How Wee Learn Math and Literacy Curriculum right here.
Now, let’s have a look at the Citrus Math Fraction Manipulatives Freebie!
Citrus Math Fraction Manipulatives
This fraction printable for kids includes 10 pages full of colorful, sweet (and sour!) fraction learning. This bundle is ideal for children in grades 1-3.
These fraction manipulatives use various citrus fruits to teach children many different fraction concepts:
First, children learn about wholes, halves, quarters, and eighths by slicing up (printable) grapefruit, oranges, lemons, and limes. There is a template of each whole fruit as well, so children can put the various fractions together again and again.
With this section, you might also choose to hide each piece of fruit and have your child go on a scavenger hunt to find each one! Once found, your child can reassemble each fruit, practicing each fraction as they do.
Next, you receive four large pictures of the fruit with instructions to cut each one a particular way (either left as a whole, cut in half, in quarters, or in eighths). Cutting each one is wonderful to really solidify how fractions work—taking one whole and dividing it up into equal parts.
After, you can challenge your child to combine the various citrus slices to make the wholes found on a very colorful fractions page!
You also receive four vocabulary cards, teaching children the words as well as the decimals associated with each fraction. Building math language is a critical piece to teaching a child math. They need to be familiar with a variety of math terms and comfortable with what those terms truly mean.
Finally, we dive into playing with adding fractions by using various pieces of lemons! Teaching adding fractions in this visual way is a wonderful way to ensure that this skill is kept practical for children. They can see how two quarters of the lemon match up to be equal to one half, for example.
