Did you know that a local mama creates all of the beautiful watercolor art for our Curriculum and Family Unit Study cover pages? Every time she creates something new, I am absolutely blown away by how stunning her artwork is! And her latest cover page design for Nature School was no exception.
When I saw those sweet little toadstools, I knew I wanted to use them as a printable to accompany the Nature School resource. And so, these Toadstool Counting Cards were born!
AND… I decided to share them with you for free! You can grab your set of Free Printable Toadstool Counting Cards at the end of this post, but keep reading for some fun ways that you can use these cards to practice counting, patterning, fine motor skills, and even some big gross motor skills, too.
3 Ways to Learn and Play with Your Toadstool Counting Cards
There are lots of fun ways that you can use these cards with your little one. Here are a few of my favorites for some inspiration:
Clothespin Clip
Have your child count each toadstool and say the number out loud. Next, have them clip a clothespin onto the numeral that represents that number. So, if they counted 3 toadstools, they would clip the clothespin to the numeral 3. A simple little activity filled with so much learning!
This activity allows your child to practice:
- one-to-one correspondence,
- number recognition, and
- fine motor skills.
Hide and Seek
Another fun way to use these Toadstool Counting Cards is to have a game of hide and seek outside! Hide the cards for your child to find. As they find the cards, have your child place them in descending order, starting with 10 and counting down to 1.
This activity allows your child to practice:
- one-to-one correspondence,
- counting down, and
- gross motor skills.
Action and Numbers
For this activity, place the cards on the ground and have your child do an action for each card. For example, they might do one jump for the card with one toadstool, and two toe-touches for the card with two toadstools. This could also be a patterning activity, having your child swap between jumping and toe-touches as they progress through the cards.
This activity allows your child to practice:
- one-to-one correspondence,
- gross motor skills, and
- patterning.
I hope these ideas gave you some inspiration to head outside with your Toadstool Counting Cards!
