Making Rock Candy

September 26, 2016 by Sarah Leave a Comment

We are big on traditions around here. Fridays have been movie night for as long as I can remember. And my kids will say exactly the same.

While I work very hard to put wholesome food on the table and into little mouths, Friday night is the exception. Chips, popcorn, and treats make Friday movie night a very special one indeed.

I stumbled upon a blog post about making rock candy and thought, as long as it was simple, it would make a fabulous activity that ends with a treat we could enjoy during our next movie night.

Luckily, it seemed completely simple and straightforward, and of course the kids were completely pumped to give it a try.

All you need is sugar, water, and some wooden sticks (like popsicle sticks) and about one week (I know, that part is the kicker!)

We followed the instructions from Paging Fun Mums: How to make rock candy (you can click that link to get the tutorial).

We mixed ours together on Monday hoping they would be ready for Friday. They were not. You can see from the photos that after the 5 days they are just beginning to crystallize on the sticks. Lots of crystals on the top of the liquid though.

Looks like we will be waiting until next Friday to enjoy these – as long as the kids don’t burst first! I will be sure to post pictures once they are finally ready.

If nothing else, this activity has been one great lesson in patience. Nothing we can do to rush this along — I just hope it is worth the wait! But if I know my Benjamin, his will disappear in all of 3 seconds. Two weeks to make, 3 seconds to devour.

Well, to each their own. And unfortunately for little Ben, those other two kids of mine will savor and enjoy every last crystal.

(You might notice that Mama made 4 … I do have a weak spot for that tiny little boy of mine …)

I hope you are had a wonderful weekend friends – Happy Monday! Thank you very much for reading.
