What is a Family Unit Study?

But first… what exactly is a Family Unit Study?

Each of our unit studies takes one big topic—like Community Helpers—and breaks it down into ten manageable, bite-sized learning topics. This format gives you the freedom to dive into learning at a pace that works for your family.

Perhaps you do one area per day, perhaps one per week. Whatever suits your fancy! You can learn and explore from start to finish in about 1-2 hours per bite-sized learning topic.

Each of the ten topics included in a unit study contains everything you need for that topic, including:

• a curated YouTube video,
• suggested information to read,
• a “what’s happening” section,
• an interesting fact,
• a discussion question,
• literacy or math extension question,
• and an ultimate can’t-be-beat hands-on activity!

Sneak Peek

In Topic Two from All About Me, your child will have the opportunity to create their family tree. They will learn about the people in your family, including what ‘immediate’ family and ‘extended’ family are, and how they are connected. The included family tree printable will allow your child to label different generations, such as grandparents, parents, and children.

🧑‍🚒 Community Helpers Unit Study

Meet your local heroes and explore vital roles—from firefighters and paramedics to librarians and teachers. Let’s learn how they keep our neighbourhoods safe and thriving.

In Topic Four from Community Helpers, you will learn about police officers! Your child will have the opportunity to learn about the different fingerprint patterns and conduct a Fingerprint Science Activity.

Who’s feeling hungry?! With mouthwatering activities, Cooking with Kids invites the whole family to explore the science, history, and art of food together.

In Cooking with Kids, you will explore these 10 topics:

Sneak Peek

In topic nine of Cooking with Kids, your child will have the opportunity to write a cinquain poem about cookies.  You will find three different skill levels for this activity to ensure all members of the family have an opportunity to make a poem and complete a good copy. 

🚌 Let’s Go Transportation Unit Study

Are your children fascinated by cars, helicopters, and things that GO!? I’m excited to introduce our amazing, hands-on Transportation unit study that will introduce your children to different forms of land, air, and water transportation, then guide them in creating their own invented mode of transportation of the future.

Did you know that a cow has four digestive components, not four stomachs? Does it surprise you that chickens are the closest living relative to the Tyrannosaurus rex? That is only the beginning! Get ready to be astonished as we discover farming with playful, inquiry-based, hands-on fun!
