Okay my friends. Wrinkle your nose with me, squint your eyes just a little, tip your head slightly to the right, and get ready to say … what the heck?
But bear with me – I promise you are going to love this!
I am so excited to be partnering with the Silly McGilly team today to bring you … SILLY McGILLY!
Now I know you are likely thinking – what the heck? – mostly because I got you all prepared to think that, but also because of what has been going on in my house for the last three weeks.
I have had Silly McGilly sitting in my family room for the last few week and every time I have a friend in, she walks over to Silly, wrinkles her nose, squints her eyes, tips her head just a little, and says – what the heck? (Or a version of heck depending on the friend).
BUT shortly there after she’d say, “THAT’S AWESOME!”
And here is why.
Silly McGilly is a way to bring magic and fun to the depths of winter – or at least he will be for me.
I have complained written in this space a lot about winter. It is a hard season for me. The cold, the kids cooped up inside, the cold, the little sun, the cold, my unhappy chickens … the cold.
Yes, winter and I are not great friends.
My attempt to overcome this is by focusing on the loveliness of the holidays over the winter season. Lots of Christmas cheer and Valentine’s Day love happening in this neck of the woods.
But then? Well, here in Ontario Canada we have a looooong winter. After Valentine’s Day we still have at least another 6-8 weeks of frigid temperatures (I shuttered typing that).
So, when I was introduced to the magic and wonder and fun of Silly McGilly I got really excited (well, after the nose wrinkle, squinty eyes, head tilt thing).
A way to bring some magic and fun to March and pull us all the way to Spring? Well now – that is a St Patrick’s Day miracle!
Silly McGilly is a sweet little Leprechaun who comes to you with his book and very own magic.
And the excitement this little Leprechaun brings! Good grief!! My boys were beside themselves. We read the sweet story and learned all about the magic of Silly McGilly.
The boys read that when they were ready for some silliness to take place they were to put Silly McGilly on the window ledge. This is the sign that the REAL Silly McGilly will come to their house to play a silly joke.
And oh goodness the excitement of it all! Would Silly turn the pictures upside down in the house? Would he turn their breakfast oatmeal green? Would he leave them gold coins? There is a crazy cute little video showing the magic of Silly – you can watch it right here.
Talk about keeping the magic alive!
The Silly McGilly website has lots of ideas for silly tricks and fabulous magical ideas. There are ideas for using Silly at home and for using him in the classroom.
I tell you, we had been missing out not celebrating St Patrick’s Day!
Seeing my kids happy and excited and completely swept away into a magical world is enough to put a smile on my face even in March.
And to put a smile on your face? Why that is icing on the cake friends!

I’m with you on the long, dreary winter! I teach preschool in western Michigan. Every February and March I have a hard time getting through the winter. My Happy Light helps, the seasonal affective disorder, and I have the top quality clothing for outdoor play with my students. Still, I think something magical like Silly McGilly will help my students and me survive until spring!
Laurie Pullen-Johnson says
I teach preschool in West Michigan, and have to use a “Happy Light” to get through the winter doldrums. I’ve read that the Grand Rapids area has one of the highest number of days with overcast, gray skies.
I would love to help my students get through the winter and have something to look forward to when coming to our classroom!
Laura Steele says

Thank you so much for sharing this! I just love his name!
My daughters were lucky to have a Kindergarten teacher who
promoted Leprechaun antics in March, and the children found
the crayons spilled, things missing, and even Leprechaun
Footprints. The idea was in some teaching idea book in the late 70’s.
What a wonderful inspiration to turn it into a book and doll
with an adorable rhyming name!
Donni says
Love the name… Silly McGilly!
