I just love it when my husband is amazed by our little ones’ knowledge! Of course, this wasn’t part of the Grade One math curriculum—it was discovered through play.
Play-based learning is the best way to teach young children. And it’s as simple as diving into a great theme.
Take Norah, for example. She was completely absorbed in The Little Flower Shop, one of our Learn and Play Packs from the HWL Membership.

- coloring beautiful flowers,
- setting shop hours,
- writing orders and receipts,

Not to mention all of the oral language she was developing as we played.
So, let’s see how playing in this way translates into the academic skills she will have experience with down the road…
- As she colored, she was building important fine motor skills
- Setting the shop hours taught her about time lapse and telling time
- As she wrote, she practiced letter formation and phonetic spelling, as well as number recognition and formation
- And making change for happy customers taught her (quite complicated) addition and subtraction in the most hands-on and concrete way!
If you can’t tell… I am very passionate about play-based learning.
Now that some of my children are nearly grown, I see again and again how play prepared them for lifelong learning. They’ve picked up big, complex math ideas with ease—because they played with those concepts as little ones.
