Soft and fluffy lambs, sweet little chicks, mooing cows, horses you can ride … it is no wonder preschoolers love a good farm theme! I have compiled some of the best books for you and your children to enjoy as you dive into learning all about the Farm!
‘Down on the Farm’ is, in fact, a theme we dive into in our preschool curriculum, Play into Kindergarten Readiness! This theme lasts for a full month and consists of daily 20-minute activities that give our preschoolers the core foundational skills to grow on. The entire curriculum lasts seven months.

Within that curriculum, I include some book suggestions to go along with each theme. Adding in some new books every month from the library, or purchasing (this post contains my Amazon Affiliate links), is a simple and wonderful way of making our homes a literacy-rich environment.
Here are the books I suggest you include with your Preschool Farm Theme:
My First Farm: Let’s get working! DK. Building vocabulary is a fabulous literacy activity for preschoolers. This farm book introduces new words and organizes those words into categories, making it easier for children to make connections. From baby animals to tractors, this farm book won’t disappoint your little farmer.
The Cow Said Neigh! By Rory Feek. This is a hilarious story about a mixed-up barnyard where the animals decide they want to be different types of animals. It is a wonderful story to teach children how it is important to be themselves.
Barnyard Dance, Sandra Boynton. You just can’t beat the catchy, lively rhymes in this book! You will be tapping your foot along with those barnyard animals as you, “Bounce with the bunnies, strut with the ducks. Spin with the chickens now – cluck, cluck, cluck!”
The Little Red Hen, Paul Galdone. This classic tale is essential for any preschool farm theme! Little Red Hen does all the work baking her bread, with no help from her friends at all. But when it comes time to eat that bread, everyone appears! So many lessons to be discussed in this sweet tale.
Moo, Baa, La La La! Sandra Boynton. I couldn’t possibly make a farm-themed book list for preschoolers without including this all-time best seller! This book is a must on every little one’s bookshelf. Learn all about animal sounds and rhyming with this soon-to-be favorite.
Mrs. Wishy Washy’s Farm, Joy Cowley. Uh-oh. Mrs. Wishy-Washy is at it again. Rubbing and scrubbing all the animals on the farm. But this time, they aren’t standing for it. Duck, Cow, and Pig are leaving mean old Mrs. Wishy-Washy for good! They run away to the big city. But they get lost, wander into a restaurant, and even stumble into a hardware store and get covered in paint! Where is Mrs. Wishy-Washy when they need her? Maybe her farm isn’t so bad after all . . .
And there you have them! This Teacher’s pick for some awesome farm-themed books for your preschooler.
Don’t forget to check out all the awesomeness that awaits you in Play into Kindergarten Readiness—perfect for at home AND in the classroom!
