There’s something pretty magical about reading chapter books aloud with kids. Whether you’re curled up on the couch or sneaking in a chapter before bed, it’s a special way to connect, laugh, and go on adventures together—without even leaving the house. And the best part? While you’re sharing a story, your child is building focus, growing their imagination, and soaking up all sorts of storytelling goodness (even if they don’t realize it yet!).
You don’t have to wait until your child is reading on their own to make the jump to chapter books; they are perfect to read-aloud and enjoy together as a family. Chapter books offer rich stories, fun characters, and just enough suspense to keep everyone asking for “just one more chapter.”
Below you’ll find some of my favorite chapter books and series that make for fantastic read-alouds for the whole family!

The Best Read Aloud Chapter Books
I thoroughly enjoyed reading these books with my kids and found that they are all fabulous family reads for all grade school ages. Let’s check them out!
Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden are four brave siblings who were searching for a home when they discovered a life of mystery and adventure! What started as a single story about the Alden Children has delighted readers for generations. Featuring timeless adventures, mystery, and classic illustrations, The Boxcar Children series continues to inspire children to learn, question, imagine, and grow.
Surviving the Applewhites by Stephanie S. Tolan
This side-splittingly funny, award-winning book is about a rebellious boy who is sent to a home-schooling program run by one family—the creative, kooky, loud, and loving Applewhites! You will have trouble putting this one down yourself!
The Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White
The delightful classic about overcoming obstacles and the joy of music. While you curl up with your young reader to share this book, you are helping to create what are likely to be all-time favorite reading memories.
A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold
This book is funny, heartfelt, and irresistible, starring an unforgettable young boy on the autism spectrum, nicknamed Bat. This sweet and thoughtful novel chronicles Bat’s experiences and challenges at school, with friends and teachers, and at home, with his sister and divorced parents. You and your kids will love this novel, and you’re sure to find something relatable to Bat.
Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
I was very excited to reread this chapterbook, this time aloud with my children, which would make it that much more special. This beloved classic story follows an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who is adopted by a family living on Prince Edward Island, Canada. With her wit, charm, and strong spirit, Anne quickly wins the hearts of everyone she meets and learns to navigate the world around her, eventually growing into an independent young woman. Along the way, she experiences the joys and sorrows of growing up and develops meaningful relationships that last a lifetime.
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
This tender novel of friendship, love, life, and passing is sure to be a favorite for the whole family. We loved reading this together, and then we watched the movie. Of course, my kids said they enjoyed the novel more; isn’t that always the case?
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren
Pippi Longstocking is another favorite of mine, and one I was very excited to read aloud with my daughter. It’s hard not to fall in love with Pippi, the crazy girl with red pigtails, no parents to tell her what to do, a horse that lives on her porch, and a flair for the outrageous that seems to lead to one adventure after another!
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
The Wild Robot is an extraordinary story full of action and thought-provoking questions as a robot learns to survive—and live—in the wilderness. A heartwarming and action-packed novel about what happens when nature and technology collide. You’ll love reading this chapter book aloud with your family, and it’s another great one to watch the movie together after.
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
This is a fabulous read-aloud chapter book to enjoy with the whole family. It is about courage, danger, and independence during a boy’s year in the wilderness, a year that changes his life forever.
The Borrowers by Mary Norton
This is an adorable story to enjoy together. My kids loved these characters and imagined we had some little borrowers in our home. Whenever we lost something or maybe someone got into the treat cupboard, it was always blamed on the little borrowers.
Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein
This might be the coolest box set of books out there! You and your kids will love reading the books, playing the games, and solving the puzzles together—a fabulous read-aloud chapter book series.
Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher by Bruce Coville
This is a funny and engaging story about a boy who accidentally hatches a dragon. You won’t be able to put this one down, and I’m sure it will spark a lot of pretend play after. What kid wouldn’t want to hatch a dragon egg?
Magic Tree House Series by Mary Pope Osborne
I can’t say enough good things about this series! When your kids fall in love with these novels, don’t worry, there are plenty of books in the series to keep you reading for a long, long time, and they keep getting better. The Magic Tree House series is a fabulous and educational adventure for the whole family.
Merlin’s Mission Series by Mary Pope Osborne
This is the next series after you finish all the Magic Tree House books. Merlin Missions are more challenging adventures for the experienced Magic Tree House reader.
Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
The Spiderwick Chronicles is an exciting series to try out. It was a bit different from what we were used to reading together, but a pleasant change, and it definitely sparked some interest, with my kids asking for ‘just one more chapter’.
Dragon Masters Series by Tracy West
Dragon Masters Series is an action-packed series with illustrations on every page. If your children struggle with chapter books due to the lack of pictures, this series is a great place to start.
The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser
This book is such a fun read to enjoy together. It is a heartwarming story about a family working together to stay in their beloved home, and they learn how truly wonderful each other is along the way.
The Turtles of Oman by Naomi Shihab Nye
A warm and humorous peek at the profound and mundane details of moving from one country to another—a perfect pick for kids on the move. It’s a great book to enjoy and read aloud together.
