With the beautiful weather appearing more and more we are finding ourselves outside more and more as well. One of the things I love doing with my crew is going for nature walks through the forest. I feel my calmest during these walks, and my little ones seem to as well.
One thing that always seems to happen is the finding of a ‘walking stick’. These treasured sticks need to be thick, but not too thick. Tall, but not too tall. And most importantly – they must have a special kink, bend, or bow to make them appear extra, extra special. At least that is what I am told.
As you can imagine, when it is time to head home these magical and special walking sticks just cannot be left behind. They must be brought home! Oh they will be ‘decorated’ and ‘treasured’ I’m told.
But they won’t be. They will end up in the mound of branches and sticks that are already at home.
I would love it if they would be though. I am all for getting creative and artsy! The trick, I thought, would be to decorate those treasured walking sticks right when the moment arose. We should decorate them right on the middle of our nature walks.
Now paint of course would work best – though that is not really nature walk material. But that was when I thought of our Kwik Stix. I have shared about these cool tempera paint sticks here before and knew they would be ideal for this craft. There is next to no mess, as it is really like using a glue stick. AND the paint dries almost instantly. PERFECT for nature walks.
The kids tried this idea out straight away and had a wonderful time decorating their prized sticks. These colourful and whacky walking sticks are now definitely treasures to keep. Details will be added – some flowers I’m told – and they will continue to be THE walking sticks.
I do find that difficult to believe. I feel as though we will wind up with a big mound of colourful and whacky walking sticks at home. But hey, it’s all for the love of art, right?
The kids had a wonderful time creating this art project and I was impressed with how lovely and vibrant the colours turned out too. If you are interested in getting your own set of Kwik Stix they are available pretty much everywhere now!
Among other places, Kwik Stix are available in stores at Walgreens, in stores and online at Michaels, online at Target, and on Amazon.com as well.
Thank you so much for reading friends. I hope you are having a wonderful start to your spring!
