There are so many fun ways you can learn and play with these alphabet cards. I share four of my favorites with you below, as well as a few tips if you are introducing your child to the letters and sounds for the very first time.

So, whether your child is learning their letters and sounds, has an interest in beekeeping, or just loves bees (in which case, you’ll also want to bookmark these 20 bee crafts and activities!)—I hope you absolutely love these honey bee alphabet cards!

Teaching Your Child Letters & Sounds

When beginning to introduce letters to children, it is ideal to begin with your child’s name letters. These letters are important to your child and hold meaning—after all, those are THEIR letters! Once your child knows their letter names and sounds, you are set to introduce letters in The Magic Letter Order. This order allows children to learn letters and their sounds and begin blending words straight away:

1. s, a, t, i, p, n
2. c, k, e, h, r
3. m, d, g, o
4. l, f, b, q, u
5. j, z, w
6. v, y, x

Starting with the first grouping, introduce the letters in lowercase form, uppercase form, and their sounds as well. Stick to just these letters until your child truly knows them. Once they do, they can begin blending the sounds to make many different word families, such as: pat, sat, tap, sap, nap, tin, and pin!

After the first group, you can progress through the rest of the letter groupings in the same way. And the best part? You can do it all through play!

Ways to Play with Your Printable Alphabet Cards

Play Go Fish

Print two copies and play Go Fish! You can use all of the cards if your child is familiar with the alphabet letters, or focus just on the letter grouping you are practicing.

Learn & Play on the Stairs

Tape these pretty cards to your stair risers or in a frequently visited hallway. Every time you go up a step (or down the hallway), call out the letter name or sound! You can also stand at the bottom of the stairs and toss a balled-up pair of socks onto a step. Whichever step it lands on, you have to call out that letter and sound!

Go on a Scavenger Hunt

Place a few of the printable alphabet cards on the ground and have your child go for a scavenger hunt to find items that start with each letter! For example, if you had the “Ss” card on the ground, your child might find a stuffie or a spoon.

Use the Printable Alphabet Cards for ‘Strewing’

Or simply display these cards in your child’s bedroom or playspace to create an environment that fosters learning! I am always amazed at the deep conversations and learning that result from strewing.

If you’re not familiar with the term, essentially, strewing is casually laying out items for your child to discover on their own. You could leave out a book, art supplies, nature items, or printables like these alphabet cards. Really anything that might capture your child’s interest and spark their desire to engage with the items and learn more!
