The weather is a wonderful topic to spark learning with little ones! Whether we’re tracking the weather with a paper chain, reading books about the weather, or learning through hands-on weather activities, it’s a topic that always seems to weave throughout our day in one way or another.
Today, I thought I would share one of the weather activities from Morning Time with Littles. But we won’t just be learning about the weather with this one… we’ll also be learning letter sounds!

Learning Letter Sounds with a Weather Activity
Materials
For this activity, you’ll need some cards with pictures of different kinds of weather on them.
You can grab a set of Free Printable Weather Cards, along with a sample of Morning Time with Littles below. Your weather cards and sample will be emailed to you immediately, and you’ll be brought to the shop, where you can learn more about Morning Time with Littles.
How to Play
This activity is nice and simple but filled with so much learning!
Lay all of your weather cards on the ground and choose one. Look at the first letter of the card you chose. If you chose rain, the first letter would be R. Now, have your little one think of a different word that starts with R – maybe “race.”
Together, come up with a silly sentence that uses those two R words. “We raced in the rain and got very wet!”
Phonological Awareness and Learning Letter Sounds
This is a wonderful way to learn and practice sound identification! Sound identification is one of the seven phonological awareness skills that little ones need to know before they can learn to read.
If the term ‘phonological awareness’ is new to you, I highly encourage you to read this blog post to learn more. It is incredibly important that our little ones learn these skills to eliminate reading struggles down the road.
In a nutshell, sound identification is the skill of being able to hear the different sounds in a word. We usually start by practicing the first sound in a word, which is the easiest for little ones to hear. Then we practice the last sound in the world, then the middle sound, which is the most difficult.
If your child already mastered phonological awareness, you could use this same activity to practice letter sounds and names (What letter makes the /r/ sound?) or even spelling!
Other Ways to Play
This game idea is really quite simple and can be applied to many different themes!
For example, if you’re teaching your little one the months of the year, you could play the same game using the month names. For January, you might come up with the word “jump” and the sentence: “In January, I love to jump in big piles of fluffy snow!”
Or, for the seasons, you might come up with the sentence: “A small, slimy snail got stuck on my slide in the summer.” How’s that for some alliteration?!
The more you play this game with your little one, the more you’ll be challenging yourself to come up with the longest and silliest sentences!
