10 Fun Math Art Projects for Grade 5
Grade 5 math can be super hands-on and exciting! Let’s help our kids enjoy learning some of those tricky subjects with these engaging math art ideas.
Fraction Friends by Lucky Learning – How cute are these fraction people? Let your child get creative making a character or person while learning about fractions. You can make it more challenging by cutting your squares in half or having them make other designs.
Math Patterns with Lego by Frugal Fun 4 Boys and Girls – I know I have a house full of kids who love Lego. This is a great way to teach patterns and multiplication while being creative.
3D Paper Cone Drawings by Art with Mrs. Filmore – This optical illusion art project combines many hidden lessons into one math art project. Children will learn about 3D illusions, graphing, spacing, and patterns.
Origami Jumping Frog by Kids Web Japan – Origami utilizes many mathematical concepts. It is a great, hands-on way to learn about geometry and fractions! This super cool Origami Jumping Frog idea is from my Math is Everywhere Family Unit Study.
Sunburst Paintings by Art Bar – Just in time for Valentine’s Day, get measuring and create a beautiful sunburst from a heart. Once your child is done, they can turn their art into a Valentine’s Day card for someone special.
Explore Geometry Through String Art by Babble Dabble Do – I promise your kids will love this hands-on activity! This math art project will teach them about geometry, fractions, and even parabolic curves. Get out the hammers, and let the learning begin.
Paste Paper Masterpieces by Mrs. Amsler’s Art Room – This is an excellent project for learning measuring, graphing, patterns, and so much more. Kids get to start by decorating a variety of papers to start. This is always a fun step to get those creative minds working and ignite the excitement to learn. After that, the math kicks in, and they are left with some awesome math art masterpieces.
Pi Skyline by What We Do All Day – This is SO creative and will really make your child focus. Each building in your child’s Pi skyline represents a number in Pi. How many buildings will your child make? Pi is the mathematical constant, so the possibility is endless.
3D Measurement Collage by E is for Explore – This one looks as fun as it is! Kids will use their measuring skills to cut different sizes on paper, and afterward, get creative and fold them into all different shapes to make a 3D collage.
Paper Airplanes – Learn how to make 10 different paper airplanes! To add some extra art, let’s decorate or color them. Afterward, you can teach kids how to find an average while playing with their newly designed and decorated paper airplanes. Have them throw their airplane five times, measure and record the distance it travels each time, add up those five distances, and divide that number by 5 to find the average distance flown.
Children take time to develop skills and learn new concepts. An absolutely fantastic way to help them practice is when they enjoy the learning. These great hands-on math art actives will be sure to spark those mathematicians and kick start some Grade 5 math concepts.
