A photo on Friday, because sometimes all you need is the picture!
Today I thought I would share a picture of some freshly dyed rainbow rice. I have been making rainbow rice for about 8 years now, and I must say – I’ve got it down to a fine science. As in, I have found the most simple way to make it awesomely.
Pop some dry rice into baggies. Add a splash of rubbing alcohol (about a teaspoon) and a few drops of food colouring. Zip up the bag, shake, shake, shake, and pour on a plate to dry for an hour. Done!
Rainbow rice is great for crafting, and perfect to use in a water table – instead of the water, of course. Or throw it in a big bin out in the backyard to dig and play with. Lots to be learned with scooping, pouring, measuring, and mixing!
Happy Friday friends! Have a lovely weekend. Be sure to visit Monday when I share some “learn to read” Quiet Bins!
Hi Sarah
Thank you for this blog. It is so helpful overflowong with great ideas. I was just wondering if the rubbing alcohol on the rice would be safe for kids if they accidentally (or not) ate them?
Hi Stacey! I am so happy you like my blog, thank you! That is a really great question about the rubbing alcohol. Of course it should not be ingested. But I think a lot of it evaporates out of the rice as it dries, and it is such a teensie weensie amount. I let me toddler use the rice, though I wouldn’t use it with a little one that puts things like this in his mouth consistently. I know that is a round about answer, but I’m sorry, I just really can’t say!
