When I was contacted by The Pencil Grip to review their newest product Kwik Stix, I was intrigued. It is not that I was intrigued so much for myself, but I was intrigued for you. You see, I am not one to mind a messy craft or paint splatters on my floor – but I know many, many friends who think I am nuts.
And I have received many a comment, email, and message from you lovely friends looking for crafts that are “not too messy”. Well the Kwik Stix are solid tempera paint – so in a nut shell, they are paints that are not messy!
My Sammy had been describing to me a project he was making at school for Christmas and I thought it sounded so cute that I decided to give it a try at home with Ben. I am not really sure how similar it is to the one Sammy made, but I am totally in love with it!
We used the Kwik Stix for this project and they were indeed NOT messy. They are a solid tempera paint and come in sort of like a glue stick container. You simply rub it on! It reminds me of oil pastels, except without the mess. Once it is on the paper it pretty much stays there. The packaging says it dries in 90 seconds, but ours was never really ‘wet’ just maybe a little damp.
I began by tracing Ben’s two cute little hands with crayon. I tell ya, the older my oldest gets the more I trace my baby’s hands!! Those tiny little hands …
Once they were traced I let Ben go to town colouring them brown. I was hoping the waxy crayons would resist the Kwik Stix and it did a little bit. Next time I would do a thicker line of crayon as it was a little tough to see. The Kwik Stix paint goes on quite thick.
It was really easy for Ben to use these, and as you can see from his hands, really not messy at all. That one speck of blue on his finger was the only dot I could find on him!
Next Ben striped the candy cane red, green, red, green. And then we cut it all out. It was nice being able to cut it pretty much straight away and not needing to let it all dry. I did the cutting for this project, but next time I will have Ben cut out the candy cane – though he won’t be touching those tiny little hands with those sweet little preserved fingers!
Finally we glued on a pom pom nose, a googly eye (which Ben had a heck of a time agreeing to use just one – there was a lot of time looking into a mirror, turning our heads to the side, and counting eyes when in a profile position), and the adorable-hand-antlers.
Voila! Cute and simple … and for my clean house loving friends – mess free!
