I’m so excited to share what literacy looks like in my Grade Four, Five, and Six Homeschool Literacy Curriculum! If you caught last week’s blog post, you’ll remember we took a look at Grades 1 through 3. Well, I’m happy to report that my approach hasn’t changed as we move up in grades. I’m still all about keeping things simple, meaningful, and doable—always focusing on quality over quantity.
Even as kids grow and their learning gets more complex, I believe it should still be joyful and engaging. That’s exactly the heart behind this homeschool literacy curriculum from How Wee Learn.
I’ve designed it to cut through the busywork and zero in on what really matters: core literacy skills, one page a day.
Let me show you how!
Grades 4, 5, and 6 Homeschool Literacy Curriculum
In the Grade 4–6 Literacy Curriculum, we focus on a deeper understanding of writing and how we can use writing to express ourselves and our ideas. We gently guide learners through a balanced mix of fiction and non-fiction, reading and writing, with thoughtfully structured weekly themes.
- In Week One, we dive into fiction reading, where students strengthen their comprehension, vocabulary, and sentence construction skills. They explore different perspectives and wrap up the week with personal reflections in their journals.
- Week Two is all about fiction writing. From brainstorming wild ideas to polishing a final draft, students are guided step-by-step through the process of creating their own stories.
- In Week Three, we shift gears to non-fiction reading—learning to take notes, proofread with care, and dig deeper into informative texts.
- And finally, Week Four rounds it all out with non-fiction writing. Whether it’s crafting a short article, organizing research, or summarizing what they’ve learned, your child is building real-world literacy skills in a fun, manageable way.
And remember—all of this in just one page a day! It’s an approach that fits beautifully into your homeschool rhythm without overwhelming your child—or you.
While the structure stays consistent, each grade level deepens the journey in a developmentally appropriate way:
In the Grade 4 Literacy Curriculum, your child begin exploring how different perspectives can shape a story and how writing can serve as a tool for self-expression.
In the Grade 5 Literacy Curriculum, they begin to think more critically, uncovering the purpose behind stories and writing with intention.
In the Grade 6 Literacy Curriculum, the focus expands to persuasive writing and how authors can influence readers!
Each coursebook includes everything you need for a full and beautiful homeschool literacy curriculum: engaging stories, daily activities, an answer key, and even a printable course completion certificate for that satisfying “I did it!” moment. There’s also an optional editing checklist to support independence and self-correction.
If you believe in quality over quantity and find yourself thinking, “Yes! This is exactly how learning should feel!”, then this curriculum is made for you.
