Imagine waking up each day in October and jumping right into the spirit of Halloween, making special memories, and having so much fun with your children, while still learning all day long. That is Halloween School—your lesson plan for an epic Halloween adventure!
When my children were little, I used to find this time of year tricky (no pun intended) to keep up with our learning. There was so much excitement about Halloween!
But now that I am an older… or let’s say “seasoned”… mama, I know better. Why fight against that excitement? We need to harness it and bring learning into our home in a completely new way.
Halloween School is a fun way to enjoy the season while building incredible skills and deep learning along the way. You will:
- 🧪 Learn all about physics and chemistry as you make some magic potions
- 🦇 Learn about balance, counterbalance, and gravity as you make a balancing bat
- 🕸️ Practice skip counting, patterning, and fine motor skills as you weave a webs
- 🧡 Build vocabulary and literacy skills as you create your own monster
- 👻 Plot coordinates and build big math skills as you create Haunted Houses
And so much more! Grab your copy right here, or keep reading to learn more about this epic Halloween lesson plan!

Halloween School Hands-On Activities
Let’s take a closer look at the 10 topics covered in the Halloween School lesson plan and the hands-on activities you’ll enjoy with each:
Topic 1: Pumpkins
Did you know there is a type of pumpkin called Atlantic Giant which can grow up to 50 pounds… a day?! Can you imagine carving a pumpkin that big?! To kick things off, you’ll learn all about pumpkins and create some pumpkin pointillism art.
Topic 2: Jack-O’-Lanterns
We think of jack-o’-lanterns as being carved out of pumpkins, but this hasn’t always been so! In this topic, you’ll learn about the history of jack-o’-lanterns, write some poetry, and try your hand at a fun pumpkin hammering activity!
Topic 3: Skeletons
Skeletons are another iconic symbol representing Halloween. It wouldn’t be Halloween night if you didn’t see a skeleton costume out and about! Get ready to learn about the skeletal system while you create a skeleton silhouette, perfect for hanging up in your window when you’re done!
Topic 4: Dressing Up
Did you know that dressing up in costumes was once thought of as a way to hide from ghosts? In this topic, you’ll learn about the history of Halloween and Halloween costumes, try a word scramble activity, then create some cute little salt dough ghosts!
Topic 5: Bats
I wonder… since bats hang upside down, do they also nurse their young upside down? Get ready to learn all sorts of interesting facts about bats, including why these creatures are a symbol of Halloween! For the hands-on activity, you’ll make your very own balancing bat. You can grab a FREE Sample of Halloween School that includes the Balancing Bat Printable below!
Topic 6: Magic Potions
If I were to make a magic potion, what would I make the potion for? By mixing some everyday kitchen ingredients, we can make things boil and bubble. Your children will make their very own potion, building literacy and creativity as they fill out their Witches Brew Recipe Card. Afterward, try making our Spooky Witches Brew and see what happens when you mix in the final, magical ingredient.
Topic 7: Spiders
It was once thought that eating a spider between two slices of buttered bread would give a witch great powers! Though we definitely do not recommend you try it! It’s time to learn about spiders, then create some special spiders with the included printable and have a spider race!
Topic 8: Spider Webs
Spider webs are intricate and beautiful, yet most spider webs are created in as little as 30 minutes to one hour! While learning more about spider webs, you’ll create your own spider web with a stick and yarn weaving project. These beauties are perfect to hang up for some Halloween decoration when you’re all done!
Topic 9: Trick-or-Treating
We can thank a Canadian for the phrase “trick or treat!” In this topic, you’ll learn more about the history of trick-or-treating and decorate your own bag to bring along with you on October 31st.
Topic 10: Black Cats
Last but not least, you’ll learn about cats—specifically black cats, who have had the tough reputation of being associated with bad luck and spookiness. (Not unlike the spooky monster you’ll draw and write about for this topic’s literacy enrichment!) You’ll also create a black cat bookmark using the included printable, then use the blank template to try making your own bookmark designs.
Plus lots of fun Halloween printables and extras!
In addition to your 28-page coursebook, Halloween School has lots of fun printables to accompany the math and literacy enrichment questions and hands-on activities, including:
