The summer solstice—the longest day of the year—will be here on June 20th! This is a wonderful opportunity to teach your child about the solstices, learn how people celebrate the summer solstice around the world, and enjoy some beautiful summer solstice crafts together.
These summer solstice crafts include ideas for little kids and big kids alike. You’ll find ideas for celebrating the sun with summer solstice art projects, baking, table decorations, and more!
What is the Summer Solstice?
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year. On this day, the sun is up in the sky for the most hours, giving us our longest day and shortest night.
As the Earth orbits the sun, it does so on a tilt. For half of the year, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted more toward the sun, and for the other half of the year, the Southern Hemisphere is tilted more toward the sun.
When one of the hemispheres is most tilted toward the sun, it is known as the summer solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere, this happens around June 20th or 21st. In the Southern Hemisphere, this happens around December 21st or 22nd.
