Days of the Week Activity for Preschoolers

January 31, 2023 by Sarah Leave a Comment

Today, I’m excited to share a lovely days of the week activity with you!

I’m a big fan of paper chains—they are fabulous for practicing fine motor skills, patterning, learning letters and sounds, counting down to a special event, or even playing in nature.

And now, my dear friend, they are also for practicing the days of the week!

This activity is from my preschool curriculum, Play into Kindergarten Readiness. It includes 28 weeks of daily activities to enjoy with your little one, covering all fundamental preschool skills through play! Days of the Week Paper Chain Activity for Preschoolers

To prep for this days of the week activity, I cut seven strips of paper (in rainbow colours, of course) and wrote the days of the week on them:

  1. Monday
  2. Tuesday
  3. Wednesday
  4. Thursday
  5. Friday
  6. Saturday
  7. Sunday

I suppose you already know what the days of the week are… but there they are!

Now my little one took over. First, she secured the ‘Monday’ piece of paper into a loop with a piece of tape (a stapler also works wonderfully).

Next, she put the ‘Tuesday’ piece of paper through the Monday loop, and secured it with another piece of tape.

As our chain was growing, we chatted a bit about each day and what we often do on those days. We talked about how on Mondays we often take a trip to the grocery store, Tuesdays we have music lessons, Fridays are our co-op day, and on Sundays we visit with grandma and grandpa.

Once the chain was complete, we hung it on the bedroom door, with Monday at the bottom and Sunday at the very top.

Now, each day this week, as my little one goes to bed, she will snip off that day’s loop.

As I tuck her into bed, we will chat about our favourite moments from the day—things we learned, things that made us laugh, and things we are grateful for.

A beautiful way to end the day, with a fresh, new loop waiting for the morning.
